Gitxaała territories stretch from the Nass River to Aristazabel Island, on the north coast of what is now British Columbia.

The Gitxaała , also known as Git Lax M’oon, people of the saltwater  are one of the most ancient societies on the coast. The village of Lach Klan (Kitkatla, BC) has been continuously inhabited since time immemorial.

Gitxaała hereditary leaders from the four clans, Gisputwada, Ganhada, Lax’sgiik and Laxgibuu, manage and protect their territories and resources according to their ayaawx, traditional laws. Gitxaała harvesters use almost 100 different marine and terrestrial resources to feed their community. Gitxaała citizens, currently numbering 2094, wherever they reside, celebrate their history, practice their traditions, respect their laws, and cherish their lands, waters and resources.

SUMMARY

Gitxaala Nation is a progressive and community-focused First Nations organization dedicated to promoting the well-being of its members. We are currently seeking a Mental Health and Addictions Counselor to join our Health Team in Kitkatla BC. This is a full-time position that offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families by providing confidential counseling, education, and support that fosters a holistic approach to mental health and wellness.

Position Overview

The Mental Health and Addictions Counselor is responsible for providing confidential counseling services to individuals, families, and the community. The role promotes a healthy lifestyle, supports recovery, and helps to strengthen family and community wellness through trauma-informed practices and culturally appropriate care. The ideal candidate will be experienced in addressing intergenerational trauma, substance use, and mental health challenges in a way that respects the unique culture and values of First Nations communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Counseling and Support: Provide face-to-face and virtual counseling to individuals and families regarding substance use, mental health, and wellness.
  • Holistic Case Management: Conduct assessments, create individualized wellness plans, and provide follow-up support using a culturally safe and trauma-informed approach.
  • Community Outreach and Education: Develop and deliver programs and workshops that promote healthy living, coping strategies, and community wellness.
  • Collaboration: Work as part of a multidisciplinary Health Team to deliver comprehensive and culturally appropriate services to support community healing.
  • Program Development: Assist in developing culturally relevant treatment and prevention programs tailored to community needs.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain confidential and accurate records of all client interactions and program activities, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Crisis Management: Provide immediate support and intervention for individuals and families in crisis, making appropriate referrals as needed.

Relationship Building and Teamwork

  • Establish and foster strong working relationships within and external to the Nation.
  • Maintain composure and perspective in difficult situations and in managing conflict.

Client Service and Engagement

  • Handle inquiries and requests for information in a respectful, professional and client-centric manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all data.
  • Must follow Nations Code of Ethics.
  • Must confirm the importance of understanding Confidentiality.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by Director.

Skills and Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or related field.
    • Certification in Mental Health and Addictions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in mental health and addictions counseling, preferably within Indigenous or First Nations communities.
    • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices, crisis intervention, and culturally safe care.
    • Experience conducting risk assessments and developing comprehensive care plans.
    • Understanding of the impacts of Residential Schools, intergenerational trauma, and colonization on mental health.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Class 5 Driver’s License.
    • Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of clients.
    • Empathy, confidentiality, and ability to maintain professional boundaries.
    • Ability to work in a team environment and establish positive relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Working Conditions and Travel:

  • This position requires the ability to work 5 days a week in Kitkatla BC.
  • Some travel may be required for meetings with funders or partners.

Compensation

  • Wages – depending on experience
