Gitxaała Longhouse and Cultural Centre Project

The Gitxaała Nation longhouse and cultural centre includes a traditional longhouse for feasting, cultural learning spaces, Elders’ meeting space, and a cultural exhibit space will support community wellbeing, education and cultural practice. It is located in Lach Klan.

Extensive community engagement on siting and design has occurred since June 2021. The longhouse design has been approved by the community and is being refined. Site preparation including a geotechnical survey and archeological excavation began in Spring 2022 and log harvest is commencing soon.

Renown Gitxaała artist Roy Henry Vickers has been contracted as Master Carver for the project and is working with Elders and community members to develop designs for the house front and house posts.

Gitxaała Nation is providing core funding for the project through funds received from benefits agreement with BC. In addition, the project has received grant contributions from PacifiCan, Heritage BC, Port of Prince Rupert, Northern Development Infrastructure Trust, First Peoples’ Cultural Council.
