Open Fire & Campfire Ban

Gitxaala Nation would like to inform all members. Under the provincial order of Public Safety and Emergency Service. The current northwest fire prohibitions under Category 2 and 3; open fire burning prohibitions.
This ban includes all Gitxaala Nation territory.

In addition, the province also prohibits the use of the following.

  • Fireworks, including firecrackers
  • Sky Lanterns

A province wide campfire ban was announced on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, and will be in effect Friday, July 12, 2024. At 12 Noon.

“Anyone found in violation of an open burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail
If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.”

Anyone lighting a Category 3 fire must first obtain a burn registration number by calling 1 888 797-1717 or emailing hpr.1800@gov.bc.ca.
