The Opportunity
The Gitxaala Territorial Management Agency is seeking a Marine and Land Use Planning Officer with a passion for Indigenous Stewardship and sustainable resource practices. Working with the existing team of experienced staff, the marine and Land use Planning Officer will play a key role in the development and execution of Gitxaała’s Nation Marine and Land use Planning projects, including as part of large multi-Nation initiatives like the Great Bear Rainforest and Great bear Sea.

The Gitxaala Territorial Management Agency plays a lead role in asserting and maintaining the rights of Gitxaala Nation, in the course of making informed decisions for the utilization, management, protection, and enhancement of the Nation’s resources. Gitxaala Nation’s territory covers a larger portion of the North Coast of what is now called British Columbia, and the Territorial Management Agency is a community-driven organization dedicated to the preservation and sustainable management of the environmental, cultural and economic resources in Gitxaala territory.
Position Overview
Under the supervision of the Senior Territorial Planner and GTMA Managing Director, the Marine and Land Use Planning Officer supports the development, coordination, and delivery of marine and territorial planning projects. This role is designed for individuals who have relevant education and some experience in planning, research, or community engagement, and are looking to deepen their skills in a collaborative, Indigenous governance-focused environment. The successful candidate will play an active role in advancing initiatives that support the protection and sustainable use of Gitxaała’s lands and waters, while further developing their skills in territorial planning and community-led land and marine governance.
Key Responsibilities:
· Planning Support
o Attend planning-related meetings with Crown agencies and prepare accurate meeting summaries and recommendations
o Conduct data collection & analysis (desktop research, fieldwork, and community-based engagement), supporting briefings to leadership as needed
o Assist in preparing technical documents relevant to protected area establishment, and territorial use and planning
o Support the development of strategic and operational plans under guidance from senior GTMA staff
o Track and report on planning milestones and work plans
· Operations & Administration
o Help organize and coordinate community engagement events and planning sessions
o Support the preparation of reports, briefing materials, and funding proposals
o Assist with internal scheduling, data entry, and communication workflows
o Contribute to identifying and preparing grant and funding applications
· Engagement and Communication
o Participate in community outreach activities and information sessions
o Assist with the development of communication products (e.g., newsletters, posters, presentation materials) for various audiences
o Respond to public and partner inquiries with professionalism and cultural awareness
· Team Support
o Collaborate with GTMA staff in planning, fisheries, guardian, and regulatory areas
o Engage in cross-functional meetings and team initiatives
o Represent Gitxaała and GTMA’s values with a respectful and community-centered approach
Qualifications:
· Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Biology, Geography, Indigenous Studies, or a related discipline
· Some experience (paid, academic, or volunteer) in community engagement, planning, research, or environmental projects
· Knowledge of Indigenous governance or marine/land planning is an asset
· Strong written and verbal communication skills
· Experience developing visual communication (i.e. maps and spatial data, infographics) is an asset
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
· Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
· Respect for Indigenous knowledge systems, governance, and cultural protocols
· Understand and comply with privacy legislation and OCAP principles
· High initiative and a willingness to grow within a dynamic, community-driven environment
