LKS | Physical Education Teacher

The Gitxaala, also known as Git Lax M‘oon people of the saltwater, are one of the most ancient societies on the Northwest coast. The community has a population of approximately four hundred people. Health and wellness guide a variety of community initiatives, often including Lach Klan School. Our school includes pre-school to grade 12 and currently serves seventy-five students. We are located in Kitkatla, about 45km southwest of Prince Rupert on Dolphin Island and accessible by boat and seaplane. The area is home to a wide variety of animal and sea life, a multitude of islands, and breath-taking views. This area is abundant with opportunity for an outdoor enthusiast.

Lach Klan School, in the Gitxaala Nation is seeking a dynamic and skilled physical education teacher who is committed to working in a positive team atmosphere to ensure success for all students. The successful candidate will be working and playing in the traditional territory of Gitxaala Nation and will engage with local culture and participate in community events. You have an excellent understanding, and recent successful experience, teaching Physical and Health education. You will bring recent and successful classroom experience with multi-grade and inter-class organization. This position requires a deep commitment to indigenization, a competency-based curriculum, and an innovative approach to land-based education.

You use strength-based, student-centered approaches to plan engaging and educational lessons based on BC Ministry of Education standards. You will have a demonstrated ability to accommodate the needs of students with a range of learning styles and abilities, able to inspire students and foster a sense of belonging for all students. You will have the ability to cultivate regular, meaningful dialogue between school and home to support parental engagement in the learning process of students. You will maintain confidentiality of students and other professional information.

Lach Klan school offers a two-year contract including a competitive salary (matching local School districts depending on qualification and experience) along with a benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vacation, housing, moving and travel subsidies. We also ensure that all our teachers are provided with ongoing professional development opportunities through FNSA, FNESC, and other bodies.

Successful candidates will have:

  • A degree in education;
  • An up-to-date member of teacher regulation branch (or working towards membership);
  • A sense of humor and be committed to providing a healthy learning environment for all children;
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the areas of outcomes-based instruction, assessment for learning, differentiated instruction and inclusive education;
  • The ability to adjust to living in a small, isolated community;
  • Demonstrated experience and training in differentiated learning, intensive behavioral management, and special needs learning;
  • Be sensitive to First Nation’s culture, and educational issues;
  • An energetic and innovative attitude and be willing to contribute to a team effort.
