ILLICT SUBSTANCE DISCOVERY ON GITXAAŁA NATION’S SHORELINE TRIGGERS COLLABORATIVE INVESTIGATION
August 10, 2023 – Gitxaała Nation Territory. Disturbing developments have unfolded as illicit substances were discovered on the shoreline in the Gitxaała Nation’s territory. The incident raises concerns of potential smuggling activities through Indigenous territories. Both local, and national authorities are in close communication with the leadership of the Gitxaała Nation and are working together to create a swift action plan.
The health and safety of the Gitxaała Nation’s residents is of utmost importance. As such, a cautious and prudent approach is recommended for everyone. Please contact the Prince Rupert RCMP at 250-624-2136 if you locate suspected drugs and to not touch them for your own protection, it is important for RCMP to seize them properly. Many drugs require safe handling practices to prevent contamination. Law enforcement agencies are working diligently to unravel the origins of these illicit drugs and bring those responsible to justice.
The Gitxaala Nation’s leadership, in conjunction with the involved authorities, emphasise their unwavering commitment to safeguarding their ancestral lands and look after the well-being of their citizens. As the investigation progresses, updates will be shared with the public.
