The village of Lax Klan, also know as Kitkatla, is on Dolphin Island, 60 kilometers south of Prince Rupert, BC and can be reached by boat or float plane. The village has been occupied for over 10,000 years and is currently home to 450 Gitxaala citizens.

The Gitxaała, also known as Git Lax M’oon, people of the saltwater are one of the most ancient societies on the coast. The village of Lach Klan (Kitkatla, BC) has been continuously inhabited since time immemorial.

Gitxaała hereditary leaders from the four clans, Gisputwada, Ganhada, Lax’sgiik and Laxgibuu, manage and protect their territories and resources according to their ayaawx, traditional laws. Gitxaała harvesters use almost 100 different marine and terrestrial resources to feed their community. Gitxaała citizens, currently numbering 2094, wherever they reside, celebrate their history, practice their traditions, respect their laws, and cherish their lands, waters and resources.

SUMMARY

The position supports the housing department team by helping with the construction, renovation, and/or maintenance of the nation’s housing in Lax Klan.

We are seeking five (5) qualified individuals to support the housing department.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES

  • Able to work in fast paced environment.
  • Be willing to work 8 hours per day.
  • Be safety conscious, able to work on scaffolding
  • Willingness to learn basic carpentry skills along with identifying workplace hazards.
  • Operate basic power tools.
  • Be a team player and a good attitude is a must.
  • Load and unload construction materials, and move materials to work areas
  • Must abide by By-law 1
  • Work as part of an assigned crew performing rough and finish carpentry work and other repairs
  • Keep worksites clean and presentable
  • Adding fixtures including door handles, hinges, locks, and closures
  • Assist carpenters with cutting, assembling, and installing materials
  • Assist in demolishing buildings using prying bars and other tools, and sort, clean, and pile salvaged materials
  • Perform other activities at construction sites, as directed

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Basic First Aid
  • Confined Space certification
  • Fall protection
  • Asbestos level 1 or 2
  • Ability to install flooring, door repairs, minor general maintenance or as directed.
  • Perform carpentry and painting work associated with preventive maintenance and renovation
  • Adhere to all departmental and company safety policies
  • Be physically fit and able to lift to 50+ lbs.
  • Must abide by By-law 1
  • Carpentry level: minimum carpentry level one- or 3-years experience equivalent to.

Selected candidates must have steel toe boots, high vis vests and hard hats.

These positions are short-term/seasonal, depending on your work ethic, this could work into long term.

RATE

$17.40/hr @ 40 hrs/week
