The village of Lax Klan, also know as Kitkatla, is on Dolphin Island, 60 kilometers south of Prince Rupert, BC and can be reached by boat or float plane. The village has been occupied for over 10,000 years and is currently home to 450 Gitxaala citizens.
The Gitxaała , also known as Git Lax M’oon, people of the saltwater are one of the most ancient societies on the coast. The village of Lach Klan (Kitkatla, BC) has been continuously inhabited since time immemorial.
Gitxaała hereditary leaders from the four clans, Gisputwada, Ganhada, Lax’sgiik and Laxgibuu, manage and protect their territories and resources according to their ayaawx, traditional laws. Gitxaała harvesters use almost 100 different marine and terrestrial resources to feed their community. Gitxaała citizens, currently numbering 2094, wherever they reside, celebrate their history, practice their traditions, respect their laws, and cherish their lands, waters and resources.
SUMMARY
Reporting to Gitxaala’s Health Director, the Gitxaala Homemaker provides support in the delivery of the Gitxaala homecare program. The Homemaker is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of individual homes, as assigned by their supervisor. Duties include, but are not limited to, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and sweeping, in addition to washing doors, walls windows, and window coverings.
The Homemaker is required to maintain an accurate and current inventory log of all supplies and materials and report any necessary repairs and/or maintenance required for cleaning equipment. Other duties may be assigned as required.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES
- Support the Nation’s homecare program to ensure prompt and courteous service to elders and community members
- General understanding of health and safety procedures for the work environment.
- Establish and foster strong working relationships with clients in the homecare program.
- Maintain composure and perspective in difficult situations and in managing conflict.
- Dispose of all garbage and recyclables in the client’s home and ensure the garbage containers and recycle bins are sanitized before being placed in the house.
- Wash walls, door handles, doors, trim, windows and window coverings.
- Perform high- and low-dusting of tables, electronics, shelves, baseboards and other surfaces.
- Ensure the restroom facilities, including the shower, tub, toilet, sink and mirrors are sanitized to the highest standard.
- Clean light fixtures and change light bulbs/tubes as required
- Clean and tidy up all rooms in the client’s home, including the bedroom(s), living room, kitchen, bathroom(s), and various other rooms.
- Monitor and report any maintenance and/or repairs needed for cleaning equipment.
- Maintain an inventory log of materials and supplies and notify your supervisor of the need for replenishing before supplies are depleted.
- Ensure the highest standard of service and quality.
- Model and follow the policies and procedures of the Nation in program delivery.
- Represent the Nation and its interest to stakeholders through professional appearance and courteous behavior.

EDUCATION/TRAINING
- Secondary School Diploma required.
- 3-5 years’ experience cleaning homes.
- First Aid certification and/or CPR certification considered an asset.

- Exhibit initiative, responsibility, and flexibility.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Excellent time management and project management skills.
- Able to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.
