Gitxaała territories stretch from the Nass River to Aristazabel Island, on the north coast of what is now British Columbia.
The Gitxaała , also known as Git Lax M’oon, people of the saltwater are one of the most ancient societies on the coast. The village of Lach Klan (Kitkatla, BC) has been continuously inhabited since time immemorial.
Gitxaała hereditary leaders from the four clans, Gisputwada, Ganhada, Lax’sgiik and Laxgibuu, manage and protect their territories and resources according to their ayaawx, traditional laws. Gitxaała harvesters use almost 100 different marine and terrestrial resources to feed their community. Gitxaała citizens, currently numbering 2094, wherever they reside, celebrate their history, practice their traditions, respect their laws, and cherish their lands, waters and resources.
SUMMARY
Gitxaala Territorial Management Agency (GTMA) is proactively recruiting Fisheries Manager to support our fisheries program. We are looking for passionate senior fisheries biologists or ecologists who have a wealth of experience in British Columbia’s fisheries biology and have a keen desire to contribute to our fisheries programs. The position will provide a dynamic and exciting opportunity for career and professional growth alongside our team which is poised to become a leader supporting the sustainability of fisheries and fisheries resources in the Gitxaala Territory. The position is based out of Prince Rupert and Kitkatla on the breathtaking north coast of British Columbia. Field work will include both day and multi‐day trips in the region within the Gitxaala Territory.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES
As a Fisheries Manager working for GTMA, your responsibilities will include the following:
- Manage fisheries program teams and mentor staffs.
- Develop workplans and manage project budgets.
- Participate in meetings and conferences regarding the fisheries resources held by DFO and other partner organizations such as North Coast Skeena First Nation Stewardship Society.
- Communicate and collaborate with DFO and other partner organizations in their programs regarding fisheries resources.
- Communicate and collaborate with Gitxaala Guardian Program Team.
- Provide technical expertise.
- Support and lead field programs.
- Conduct data collection, compilation, analysis and reporting.
- Develop data management platform.
- Support with writing and submitting permits and authorizations.
- Work with GTMA team to support its long-term plan.
- Travel to remote locations.
- Demonstrate attention to detail in completing administrative, Health and Safety, and field documentation.
Relationship Building and Teamwork
- Establish and foster strong working relationships within and external to the Nation.
Client Service and Engagement
- Maintain confidentiality of all data.
- Must follow Nations Code of Ethics.
- Must confirm the importance of understanding Confidentiality.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as necessary in the performance of the position and as assigned by Director.
Qualifications, Requirements, Interests, and Other Experience:
- M.Sc. and/or B.Sc. A degree in fisheries or equivalent preferred.
- Experience showing management of projects, design and execution of projects and management of project teams over five (5) years.
- Current knowledge of BC fisheries.
- Current knowledge of BC and Federal legislation, government agencies and permitting procedures.
Rate:
$75,000 – $80, 351.00
