Vice-Principal (Grades K4-12) – Lach Klan School

Lach Klan School, in the Gitxaała Nation, is seeking a Teaching Vice-Principal whose primary responsibilities will be to support students with diverse learning needs, teaching staff and community engagement.

Job Requirements – The successful candidate must have:

  • Extensive teaching experience.
  • The ability to understand problems and challenges from multiple stakeholder perspectives (local/foreign teachers, EA, support staff, students, parents, elders, and the community).
  • Demonstrated experience with identifying and deploying the resources needed to solve conflicts and problems.
  • Training and demonstrated experience in working with students with diverse learning requirements, especially with students with special needs.
  • Demonstrated experience building trust, good rapport and a caring environment among all staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Differentiate lessons to meet the needs of all students, while helping to create a rigorous learning environment.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to implement common assessment and reporting practices and data collection for enhanced student learning.
  • Build collaborative and effective relationships with students, staff, parents and the community.
  • Work closely with the Principal and EAs to ensure student’s needs are being met.
  • Represent the needs of teaching staff to the Administration and the Superintendent. 
  • Become familiar with all aspects of the principal job. 
  • Stand in for the principal as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of First Nations communities in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Certified or in the process of becoming certified by the British Columbia Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exceptional and creative teaching skills.
  • Able to manage multiple student files.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of personal or life skills management.
  • Comfortable working with children of different ages, as well as faculty and parents.
  • Leadership skills when working with groups and individuals.

We provide Two-year contracts, health benefits, pension, a $3,000 moving allowance, a retention bonus after the second year $4,000 and a competitive salary (between $60,000 and $110,000 depending on qualifications and experience).

Lach Klan School

The Gitxaała, also known as Git Lax Mo’on, people of the salt water, is one of the most ancient societies on the Northwest coast. The community has a population of approximately 400 people. Health and wellness guide a variety of community initiatives, often including Lach Klan School. Our school includes preschool to grade 12 and currently serves around 80 students. We are located just over 45km south of Prince Rupert and accessible by boat and seaplane. The area is home to a wide variety of animal and sea life, a multitude of islands, and breathtaking views. This area is abundant with opportunities for an outdoor enthusiast.
