Manager of Human Resources

Gitxaała territories stretch from the Nass River to Aristazabel Island, on the north coast of
British Columbia. The Gitxaała (also known as Git Lax M’oon, people of the saltwater) are one of
the most ancient societies on the coast. The village of Lach Klan (Kitkatla, BC) has been
continuously inhabited since time immemorial. Gitxaała hereditary leaders from the four clans,
Gisputwada, Ganhada, Lax’sgiik and Laxgibuu, manage and protect their territories and resources
according to their ayaawx, traditional laws. Gitxaała harvesters use almost 100 different marine
and terrestrial resources to feed their community. Gitxaała citizens, currently numbering 2100,
celebrate their history, practice their traditions, respect their laws, and cherish their lands,
waters and resources no matter where they reside.

Located in Lach Kan (Kitkatla) the Nation is looking to add an experienced HR professional as Head
of Human Resources to the leadership team. Currently reporting to the CAO, the new HR Manager will
be responsible for a Nation with 80-100 people spread across the following divisions –
Administration, Housing, Public Works, Education, Health, Language and Culture.

As a member of the leadership team, the Manager of Human Resources is responsible for merging the
Nation’s strategic priorities a d objectives of the nation with well-developed
human resource processes and programs.

Some key responsibilities include:

  • Developing an HR department and business plan that is aligned with the business strategy and
    priorities of the Nation – including budget and roadmap.
  • Act as key advisor on all employee relation matters and develop HR policies that address
    concerns such as social media policy, work from home policy, etc.
  • Elevate the Gitxaala Employment Standards Act – ensuring it is in alignment with the BC and
    Federal Employment Standard Acts.
  • Develop a talent strategy that connects performance management and professionally
    developed orientation and onboarding.
  • Develop KPI to measure the performance of the HR function and report to leadership
  • Responsible for Employee Records management, accuracy, and maintenance, ensuring security and
    integrity of personnel files and records.
  • Responsible for Employee benefits administration (through Sunlife/Canada Life) in coordination
    with the Benefits Consultant, Insurance Carriers and Nation Pension Plan.

As the Ideal Candidate:
For this important new hire, the leadership team is looking to meet candidates who possess
competencies including the following:

  • A solid reputation as a proactive and responsive HR advisor with solid insight into HR programs,
    processes and best practices; Able to merge business strategic plan with a well-developed HR plan.
  • Experience working with First Nations businesses, governments, and economic organizations
    including an understanding of First Nations political environment and sensitivities is desirable.
  • 5 years’ experience as a strategic HR advisor, coach and mentor for staff at all levels who
    understands the confidential nature of their role.
  • Considerable knowledge of Human Resources Statutes, regulations, policies, procedures and
    their applications, including Employment Standards Act, Human Rights Code, and WCB legislation.
  • Possess a degree or diploma (in HR, Business, or Psychology) or a CIHRP from AFOA or CHRP
  • Experienced in using Microsoft Office Suite as well as ADP or other payroll system along with
    insight on HR tools to support recruitment plus employee record and reporting.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills with ability to work with changing
    priorities and timelines.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written, and the ability to
    deal with employees in a professional manner.

The salary for this role is $80,000 with benefits, housing in community and relocation support if

Klan (2 hours south of Prince Rupert). We could even consider a candidate who resides
part-time in Lax Klan and rest of time in Prince Rupert.
