Lead Gardener – Vacancy Announcement

We are seeking a reliable and hard-working individual to join our team as Lead Gardener.

Gitxaała Nation Community Food Security Division encourages local food production and thereby maintains a Community Garden and a Greenhouse.

We are seeking a reliable and hard-working individual to join our team as Lead Gardener. As a lead gardener you will be responsible to overseeing the community garden and greenhouse operations and guide/support two garden workers.

Role/Responsibilities

  • Community Garden and Greenhouse maintenance, cleaning, rack building/repair, and ensure preventative maintenance procedures are followed.
  • Seeding which includes filling and labeling trays with soil and plant seeds into trays manually to be grown.
  • Work with plants by moving, planting, pinching, spacing, hanging baskets, putting trays/containers on benches, transplanting plugs, etc. into greenhouse.
  • Weed garden beds and remove debris from garden areas.
  • Water plants and lawns as required.
  • Maintain garden tools and equipment.
  • Keep garden areas clean and tidy.
  • Organize product on docks when shipment arrives in community.
  • Attend program development meetings with other staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • 2 – 3 years’ experience in gardening preferred.
  • Physically fit and able to perform manual labour tasks.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Attention to details and ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and stoop for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
